Brief introduction to Mr. Lau Weng San

Lau Weng San is a likely candidate for the state seat of KAMPUNG TUNKU in the Parliamentary Constituent, PJ Utara (Petaling Jaya Utara).

The current assemblyman (ADUN) for the state seat of KAMPUNG TUNKU is Wong Sai Hou who has demonstrated that he did not act in interest of the Petaling Jaya residents as illustrated by the illegal bill board and requirements for advertisers to pay money to the then Petaling Jaya Town Council (MPPJ or Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya) as council member.

Mr. Lau Weng San is the Parliamentary Secretary to Y.B. Lim Kit Siang, the Opposition leader, very likely not drawing a high salary which he might get had he opted to remain in his field of specialization, which is Chemical Engineering. If Mr. Lau wants to become rich, he could have chosen either to pursue a more lucrative career as a Chemical Engineer or join the Barisan. But he joined DAP instead, which is not going to make him rich. Obviously Mr. Lau Weng San will be hard pressed to finance his own service center, but I think he is using the DAP headquarter as his service center.

Update: Lau Weng San service center is near the New Seaview Restaurant in Paramount Garden. Directly opposite the restaurant are terrace houses with a side road in between. Go along this side lane to the road behind the terrace houses and the service center is a short distance to the left.

Teoh Lee Lan appeal for support - Shah Alam High Court

Dr. Pornthip will testify at the inquest on 18th August at the Shah Alam courts.

Your presence will certainly lend support to the family of Beng Hock in their quest for justice. At the recent public forum at the KLSCAH, Teoh Lee Lan, sister of Teoh Beng Hock, lamented the dwindling support from the public as reflected in the dwindling attendance at events. She appealed for continued support so I hope many will attend the hearing tomorrow at the Shah Alam High Court tomorrow

Abstract
Malaysia is in reality an electoral one-party state, thanks toelectoral manipulation, erosion of federalism and local democracy and draconian laws. Because the system operates on the "winners-take- all"logic, there is no room for a second contending party/coalition to survive healthily. After the 2008 political tsunami, many Malaysians talk passionately about two-party system. For some, it simply means a changeof government. However, if Barisan Nasional recovers its lost ground under Najib, will the so-called "budding two-party system" come to an end? This paper argues that without substantial institutional reform of electoral system, two-party system is not an equilibrium point and Malaysia may have to choose between resurrecting one-party predominance or sinking into chronic chaos and instability ala Perak.

Biodata
Wong Chin Huat has just completed his PhD from University of Essex,United Kingdom on "The Implications of the Electoral System for Party Competition in West Malaysia, 1982-2004". His research interests cover democratization, institutional engineering, party politics, ethnic politics and rational choice theory. He teaches journalism at Monash University Sunway Campus and writes regularly on Malaysian politics for the nutgraph.com and merdekareview. com (Chinese). He isalso active in the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections 2.0 (BERSIH2.0) and other civil society groups. He was detained for three days inMay 2009 for initiating the 1BLACKMalaysia campaign in protest of the Perak Constitutional Coup.

PROTEST AT RTM – AGAINST POLITICAL INTERFERENCE

Chou was sacked after he made public that his documentary was axed and that his superior in RTM has told him that “it would have negative impact on the (just-concluded) Sibu by-election”.

This is to inform you that DAP PJ Utara will be organizing a Public Briefing on the “Restructuring Process of Selangor Water Industry” on 4th March 2009 in Crystal Crown Hotel, Jalan Utara, Petaling Jaya.

The briefing is to provide detailed explanations to the public about the restructuring effort of the water services industry in Selangor. Of late, four major water concessionaires, namely Syabas, Slash, Puncak Niaga and Abass have decided to turn to the Federal Government to negotiate for a better deal which could result in higher water tariff (as high as 37% according to agreement) for the people of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The public briefing will be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia and English. In view of the short notice, I appreciate if you and your organizations could assist to mobilize and inform your members, friends and neighbors to attend the public briefing. Our panelists from the Water Review Panel appointed by the Selangor State Government will be present to brief the public. Speakers: MP for PJU Tony Pua and MP Charles Santiago have confirmed. Media Awareness Workshop:

Media, Democracy and Human Rights

sponsored by the Canadian High Commission.

The workshop is primarily for young people, from upper secondary schools and colleges and higher learning institutions, given that this is the generation that is most exposed to and influenced by the media in their daily lives.

The workshop aims to raise the level of awareness of participants in 3 areas
· the various aspects of the media industry in Malaysia ,
· the laws and other restrictions that affect the media industry and democracy,
· how to critically ‘read’ the media.
The workshop is structured in a manner which will allow for input from the speakers as well as active participation by the participants. There will be break-up sessions to encourage participants ‘read critically’ the content of the media. Comparisons will also be made between mainstream media and the Internet media

It is hoped that such ‘media awareness’ or ‘media literacy’ would empower young people as active citizens of a democracy to demand real changes in the way the news is reported.

As places are limited, registration prior to the workshop is required. The registration fee for the workshop is RM10/- only. This can be given as cash or in a cheque made out to Aliran and sent to Aliran at 103 Medan Penaga, Jelutong 11600, Penang by the 28th of February, 2009.

Candlelight Vigil abolish ISA Penang GMI

The ISA has been an oppressive tool to silence the voices of justice and those who put their lives at stake to make Malaysia a better place.

It is time we say no to ISA for good. We condemn any act to vilify the citizens of this country. At present there are about 72 people held under ISA without trials. We are going to send letters, postcards and Raya cards for the detainees.

If you would like to send messages (Raya card, postcard or letter) to the detainees you can always come over and show your support.

Our actions will surely define whether it is a dawn or another pit of endless darkness, for the detainees and other Malaysians who rise up to defend what is right and just.

Included will be instructions on how to get there from Federal Highway heading from Kuala Lumpur towards Klang as well as from the LDP (Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong) highway heading from SS3, Taman Megah, SS2, Damansara Jaya and Utama, etc., plus photos of landmarks so that you can be assured that you are going the correct way:

Instructions on how to get to Lau Weng San Service Center from Federal Highway heading towards Klang plus photos of landmarks

If you start from Kuala Lumpur, Section 5, PJ New Town, etc. heading towards Klang, you will pass PJ Hilton, Amada Hotel, Menara Axis and as you proceed further, you will have to go over a flyoever. When you are close to where you are supposed to exit from the Federal Highway, you will see on your left the factory of Guiness Anchor Bhd.:



Once you reach this point, you will also see further ahead the "PJ Penang Bridge" or the suspension bridge of LDP over the Federal Highway:



Keep to the left and exit the Federal Highway, then keep to the right to get to the traffic lights. Once light turns green, turn right, then right again, and you will be back again on the Federal Highway, but now heading towards Kuala Lumpur. You will again see Guiness Anchor factory, but this time on the right. Slow down, keep left and watch out for the exit to Sungai Way New Village (Seri Setia):



Turn left at the entrance to Seri Setia you see far ahead in the photo and proceed along Jalan Besar or Jalan SS9A/1. You will then pass the Seri Setia wet market on the left:



and directly on the right, the Kampung Baru Community Hall:



A little bit further, you will pass the Kwong Wah Baru cinema on the left:



and the Balai Polis Sungai Way (Sungai Way Police Station) on the right:



Just a bit further, you will pass SJK (C) Sungai Way (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Sungai Way) on the right.

Once you reach this point, you have to be watchful for the Kedai Makanan Lapan Puloh Lapan on the right where immediately after, you will have to turn right into the side road:

The first door to the left is the entrance to Lau Weng San Service Center cum DAP Sungai Way-Subang branch office, and if you glance inside, this will be what you will see at the moment:



Pretty bear eh, but you have to keep in mind they have to operate under very tight budget. Any help you can provide including donations I think they would highly appreciate, but if you specifically want to donate towards the running of this service center, I think you will have to indicate your preference as the link above is a general link for donations for DAP PJ Utara when the Member of Parliament, Tony Pua Wee Kiam, State Assemblymen Lau Weng San (Kampung Tunku), Dr. Cheah Weng Ying (Damansara Utama) and Edward Ling (PJ Selatan) work as a team.

If you are proceeding from Damansara Utama, etc. along LDP (Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong) towards Federal Highway or Sunway, you will pass various landmarks like Western Digital, LDP Furniture Center, etc. Once you pass LDP Furniture Center, you will have to keep to the left to exit LDP. When you get to the exit to the Federal Highway:



Once you see the above, keep left and turn left. You will end up on the Federal Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur. The rest is just the same as the section above.

MUDA Research Study on Young Malaysians and National Unity

Malaysia is polarized along both racial and religious lines and this is possible source of serious strife for this multi-racial and multi-religious country. So it is a great and praiseworthy effort of the The Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) to have conducted a study involving 1000 young Malaysians between the age of 18 and 35 years in Peninsular Malaysia regarding their opinions of National Unity over a period from July to August 2007 . Both rural and urban areas were covered. The study found that young Malaysians were generally optimistic about the state of national unity in the country, but some disturbing trends need to be urgently addressed to avoid further racial polarization.

In the email I received, Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute and the National Young Lawyers’ Committee (NYLC) of the Bar Council were also mentioned, but I am not sure what are the relationship between them. Whatever it is, they will be launching the MINDA MUDA Research Study on Young Malaysians and National Unity together with a press conference. You and your representative are invited.

The assembly point for DAP (Democratic Action Party) supporters is at a playground between SS2/54 and 19/40. Road, SS2/53 is closed to traffic, get there from Road SS2/57 (and the roads after that) or from Jln 21/3 on the other side.

Supporters are encouraged to wear Come in DAP T-shirts, caps, badges, umbrellas. You can get them at the DAP Selangor at number 77, Road 20/9, Paramount Garden, Petaling Jaya if you dont have any.
