Forked tongued cakap tak serupa bikin Najib Abdul Razak: "1 Malaysia is intended to provide a free and open forum to discuss the things that matter deeply to us as a Nation. It provides a chance to express and explore the many perspectives of our fellow citizens."

On August 1st 2010, people from all walks of life gathered outside Amcorp Mall to hold a (peaceful) candlelight vigil. The purpose was to express the people's prolong dissatisfaction towards the ISA (Internal Security Act), a draconian law allowing detention without trial. For years the people of Malaysia have struggled to bring about the abolishment of the Act but to no avail....

Ahmad Ismail to be arrest under ISA for his protection?

Malaysia Insider reported Ahmad Ismail to face sedition charge? because of the allegedly seditious words Ahmad Ismail uttered at an election campaign for the Permatang Pauh by-election. He allegedly said that Chinese were immigrants and squatters and therefore could not expect to have equal rights as the Malays. His comments were reported by Sin Chew Daily and led to the arrest under ISA of the reporter Tan Hoon Cheng "for her protection" (Syed Hamid Albar, Home Minister's most ridiculous statement). I just wonder if Ahmad Ismail would be arrested under ISA for his protection?

PJ Anti-ISA candlelight vigil as usual - even a little boy was not afraid

This Sunday Anti-ISA candlelight vigil is the first candlelight vigil with a Police Permit. The Police permit came with ridiculous conditions however. Among the conditions were participants cannot hold lighted candles, cannot wear Anti-ISA T-shirts, no banners, no leaflets, etc. The authorities must have thought that by arresting a few last Sunday, the others would be afraid. However the people were not afraid. You can see a good crowd in the photo below. The vast majority of the demonstrators did not know about the issuance of a Police permit and they came despite knowing that previous demonstrators had been arrested. They refused to be cowed by the authorities. They wore NO TO ISA T-shirts and lighted candles. You can see some No to ISA T-shirts and lighted candles in the photo below:



Bernard Khoo with KJ John. This was the first time I saw KJ John at the candlelight vigil. Not only KJ John joined the protesters, he also gave a great speech where he spoke about Rosa Park, a black women refusing to give up a bus seat to a white. And because Rosa Park refused to give in to unjust laws and regulations, others like Martin Luther King followed and Obama was elected to become the first black President of the mighty
United States of America. Our small actions of bravely attending peaceful candlelight vigil will eventually lead to the abolishment of the hated ISA (Internal Security Act).



We hope that more Malaysians will come forward to be counted. There is nothing to be afraid of. Even this little boy with a lighted candle is not afraid:

MCA toothless tiger empty vessel

MCA made a lot of noise about the ISA (Internal Security Act) but when it comes to action - zilch! Zero! No action. Did any of their MPs sign the petition urging the prime minister to prioritise the debate on the Internal Security Act? No. Not a single MCA MP sign the petition. So all the noise they made against the ISA is hot air, hogwash. MCA is a toothless tiger. An empty vessel making the loudest noise not accompanied by action. I have given up completely on MCA. MCA is history. They can be consigned to the rubbish bin for all I care.

Here is one MP who is not an empty vessel. This is Billy Abit Jol, MP for Hulu Rajang and vice-president of Parti Rakyat Sarawak. This the the only BN (Barisan Nasional) MP who signed the petition to press Abdullah Badawi for a debate on the ISA. The other MPs who signed the petition were 2 independents and the rest are from Pakatan Rakyat.

21st Anniversary Operasi Lalang: Mass arrest under ISA

Tomorrow, 19th October, is the 21st Anniversary of Operation Lalang (Operasi Lalang or Ops Lalang) during which 106 persons were arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the publishing licenses of two dailies, The Star and the Sin Chew Jit Poh and two weeklies, The Sunday Star and Watan, were revoked. To commemorate that infamous even, a black mark in Malaysia's history, GMI (Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA) and AI (Amnestry International) is organizing this event:

Operasi Lalang was carried out by Mahathir's Barisan Nasional Government on October 27, 1987 by the Malaysian Police to crack down on opposition leaders and social activists. The Operasi Lalang saw the infamous arrest of 106 persons under Internal Security Act (ISA).

Draconian ISA Abolished MALEK HUSSIN detention

Here is a personal account of Malek Hussin, who was arrested and detained under the draconian and unfair ISA (Internal Security Act). Malek Hussin described how he was arrested and handcuffed in front of his house and the police searched his house without a search warrant. His repeated requests for the reasons for the arrest and the search warrant just met with a robotic answer "ISA" by the arresting officer special branch officer Borhan Daud. Malek Hussin described how he was slapped on the left cheek by special branch officer Borhan Daud that left a ringing tone in his left ear which probably caused a 50% hearing loss. Malek described how he was stripped of his cloths and handcuffed while completely naked, how he was punched and kicked by a number of officers while naked and handcuffed.

His account showed how cruel the police can be and gives very strong reasons why ISA should be abolished and why IPCMC (Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission) should be implemented immediately to prevent abuses by the Malaysian police.

Guns versus candles - Candlelight Vigil turned into a march

You know the saying that hindrances can be a blessing in disguise (my own version)? Well, it turned out to be true on the night of 27 September 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There was supposed to be a peaceful candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square) where the tallest flagpole is located:



Unfortunately (or fortunately) the biased Malaysian Police barricaded the place and prevented the peaceful candlelight vigil from taking place at the planned location.



However, the demonstrators would not be deterred. They marched from the tallest flagpole in the world to the other end of Dataran Merdeka (junction of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak) along the Klang River and by the beautiful Masjid Jamek:





Thousands of demonstrators holding lighted candles and shouting "Mansuhkan ISA" (Abolish ISA) ended up at the other end of Dataran Merdeka at the junction of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak where it is busier and more visible and wherew they faced off riot police with guns, batons and shields:



Malaysian riot police with guns, batons and shields to counter peaceful demonstrators with only lighted candles as their weapons. Do we need such potentially violent countermeasures against harmless demonstrators without any weapons beyond little harmless lighted candles?



After a noisy demonstration at a very busy part of Kuala Lumpur, demonstrators slowly marched along Jalan Tun Perak towards the even more busy Pudu Raya:



I held a lighted candle too with no shield protecting my fingers from the hot melting wax. The melted wax solidified at my thumb until it fuses the lighted candle with my thumb and it can be held high above my head without me having to grip it with my fingers:



All in all, despite the presence of armed riot police, the candlelight vigil turned march is successful in demonstrating our feelings of revulsion against the draconian ISA (Internal Security Act) to the public as those places we were in were all very busy parts of Kuala Lumpur.

Hindraf Abolish ISA candlelight vigil - guns versus candles

Guns versus candles. Riot police with vicious batons and shields versus 2,000 peaceful demonstrators. Malaysians against the ISA (Internal Security Act) which allows detention without trial showed that they are not cowed by guns, batons and shields and held a peaceful candlelight vigil cum march through the streets of bustling Kuala Lumpur. Even an LRT (Light Rail Transit) train overhead slowed down to watch the demonstrators who were shouting various slogans such as "Mansuhkan ISA" (Abolish ISA), Hindraf Valga (Long Live Hindraf), Free RPK (Raja Petra Kamaruddin).

Abolish ISA: GMI ignored police order to disperse at Masjid Jamek
