UMNO BN cause me hypertension

Today's post is a sort of personal post, about the happenings in Malaysia blamed on UMNO BN and its partners in crime (Attorney General, Chief Justice etc) making me very angry and causing my blood pressure to rise.

How did it come about that we Malaysians are so docile to be letting them get away with unfair persecution of Anwar Ibrahim (withholding documents that they should have to enable them to have a fair trial etc) whild at the same time not prosecuting people like VK Lingam who was named by a Royal Commision as one who should be prosecuted but got away because the x@!*% Chief Justice said that event is in the past. Isn't Saiful accusation that Anwar sodomized him an event in the past so why is the AG's department hounding him?

When will we see true justice in Malaysia? Can't wait for UMNO/BN to be chased out from Putrajaya.

Tengku Razaleigh: People, arise, claim and demand

Malaysians, Tengku Razaleigh on accessing the current political situation in Malaysia to be bleak, asked the people to rise up to claim their institutions, and demand that our public institutions are answerable to them. We must wake up to our sovereignty as citizens, reclaim the constitution which constitutes us as a nation and guarantees our rights, and demand a comprehensively reformed government to restore public confidence. We must do this before it is too late.

Read the full article in the Malaysian Insider at Why I shall not be accepting Zaid’s offer
July 22, 2009
JULY 22 — I am honoured that Datuk Zaid Ibrahim should speak so highly of me, and consider me worthy of national leadership. He invites me to join PKR, and to dissociate myself from a party which he now finds fascist and racist.

I am under no illusions that Umno is bound for destruction on its present course. Neither do I hold unrealistic expectations about the possibility of reform when the rot has gone so deep.

I offered myself for the Umno presidency last year on an agenda of thorough-going reform. I proposed a complete democratisation of Umno by opening all positions to election by every ordinary member and abolishing quotas on candidacy. I said Umno must do this to be consistent with the principle of democratic governance demanded by the Federal Constitution. Every member’s vote must count, and every member must be free to offer himself for leadership. I was stopped by the quota system that I opposed.

I am the last person to entertain illusions about the ease of reforming Umno. The party that I joined half a century ago as an idealistic young man has indeed lost its soul. It has become corrupt, this corruption has weakened it, and as it grows weaker it is tempted more and more to fan racial feeling and abuse public institutions to maintain power. This is a death spiral.

I am aware of Umno’s weaknesses. I have not failed to point them out from a sense of loyalty to the cause for which Umno was formed in 1946, a cause which our present corruption betrays.

I am not in Umno because I “harbour hope of saving Umno” in its present incarnation. I remain because the cause for which Umno was formed, and the principles which guided its promotion, has not gone away just because we have lost our way 60 years later, and they need to be upheld.

The high principle of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak and Tun Ismail, their devotion to nationbuilding, their incorruptibility, their sense of fair play and their devotion to duty, exemplified for me as a young man the meaning of this cause, and how it could be both Malay and Malaysian, nationalist and cosmopolitan, traditional and contemporary, at one and the same time.

The Malay cause was not premised on an eternal zero sum game between the native and the immigrant. We meant to build a nation united by a prosperous, confident and enlightened Malay community, not a permanent state of divide and rule by political lowlife. We meant to foster Malay leadership worthy of national leadership, and we looked to our common future as Malaysia rather than to our past as people accidentally brought together by colonial history.

So much is ideal. Yet it is important that we hold up ideals in today’s moral chaos. The future of our political system lies in a healthy, competitive democracy. If so, whether or not it looks realistic right now, we shall need a reformed incarnation of this nation’s most important political party. The Umno ideal which I embraced half a century ago has a role to play in the future we hope for.

A second reason I shall not be accepting Zaid’s kind offer is that things have deteriorated to the point that party affiliation is really not the issue anymore. The issue is how we are to save our country.

Our major public institutions and our political system have degenerated to the point that the public no longer trusts them. A democratic system of government cannot function below a certain threshhold of public confidence. The suspicious death of Teoh Beng Hock under the custody of a watchdog body reporting directly to a prime minister who has his own public confidence issues may have pushed us below that threshhold.

What we must do now goes beyond political parties. We need the rakyat to rise up to claim their institutions, and demand that our public institutions are answerable to them. We must wake up to our sovereignty as citizens, reclaim the constitution which constitutes us as a nation and guarantees our rights, and demand a comprehensively reformed government to restore public confidence. We must do this before it is too late.

Broken promise: Ladang Siliau low cost houses

This article from Free Malaysia Today: BN does number on estate workers... again will be the second of the series of compilation of BN sins and the first for Broken Promises:

BN does number on estate workers... again'

Protests by workers of Ladang Siliau over BN broken promise

FMT EXCLUSIVE LUKUT: Workers at Siliau Estate, near here, are angry with the Barisan Nasional for being fork-tongued in its pledges.

During the Bagan Pinang by-election last year, the BN government had promised to build as many as 150 low-cost houses under its Hardcore Poor Development Project (PPRT). The houses were to be sold to the estate workers.

But less than a year later, BN went back on its word saying that it had never promised to sell them the PPRT houses but merely pledged to rent them to the workers.

During a recent visit to the estate, FMT discovered that few, if any, knew that the PPRT houses were not for sale.

Said K Chandra, 42, a palm oil harvester: “I don’t know anything about this. They did not tell us that the houses were for us to rent. They told us we could buy them.”

Chandran, however, did not seem surprised at BN’s about-turn on the election promise.

“I am not shocked or upset. We all heard BN promise to sell us the houses. If it does not fulfil its promise, our votes won’t go to BN anymore,” he said.

He said there were now 30 families in the estate. The rest had left and were working outside.

"But we are still close and keep in touch with each another. So it's not easy to break the Siliau estate population for political purposes," he smiles.

He also said the estate people were not staunch BN supporters and had only given BN a chance in the by-election to see if it would keep its promises.

“If BN fails to fulfil its promise, more than 400 voters will turn to Pakatan Rakyat,” he said, adding that most of the estate workers had sent their applications and documents to buy the PPRT houses by the end of this February.

“We filled up the forms and attached the necessary documents. The MIC branch chairman himself collected the forms from us,” said Chandran.

Unfair deal

Another harvester, C Puspavalli, said it was not right that the BN “change its words” now that it had won the by-election.

“I am very disappointed because once the BN said it wants to sell the houses to us, now it wants us to rent. This is not fair at all.

"During the Bagan Pinang by-election, MIC promised that the houses would be sold to us.

“After the BN won the election, the local MIC chief met us and gave us several forms to fill so that we could buy the house.

“But he did not collect back the forms although he stayed only two rows in front of my house," she said.

A mistake

MIC secretary-general and state MIC leader T Rajagopalu could not be reached for comment.

However, Negri Sembilan exco member and MIC's elected representaive VS Mohan, when contacted, said the Housing and Local Government Ministry made a mistake in announcing that the houses were not for sale.

"We have already informed the ministry and brought the matter up to Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hassan.

“There was a mistake… normally PPRT houses are only for rent and not for sale but the Ladang Silau PPRT project is an exception, which the Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin himself had announced.

“So, I feel the estate workers need not worry or be concerned about the matter,” he said, adding that he will meet the estate workers soon to explain the situation.

Wastage: Kudat dam built without water source

====================================
-->
I think it would be a good idea of archiving all the wanton wastages, scandals, power abuses and corruption by the dastardly UMNO/BN so I will now begin compiling them as they are uncovered and as time permit, later search for all those that had been uncovered in the past. Below is an article taken from Free Malaysia Today: New dam built in Kudat but no water source:

New dam built in Kudat but no water source

Kudat dam completed but without water and source

KOTA KINABALU: Standing tall on an arid piece of land in Kudat is a dam that has cost the government RM300 million to build. Construction on the multi-million-ringgit project began five years ago and it is now almost complete.

It looks sturdy and well-built and appears like it could do what it was built to do -- hold sufficient water to quench the thirst of the district. But therein lies a problem. There is no water source anywhere in sight.

Now, the Sabah DAP has expressed grave concern that the soon-to-be-completed Milau Dam near Sikuati in the northern-most district of the state may end up as yet another white elephant.

Its concern was based on the fact that without a viable water source, the dam must depend on rain.

A downpour is a rarity here, considering that Kudat is known to be the driest place in Sabah.

Sabah DAP chief Hiew King Cheu made the observation following a fact-finding inspection by him and several DAP leaders at the project site last Saturday.

He said the inspection was prompted by some concerned local residents who doubted the feasibility of the project.

Hiew said he was told that the project was first proposed some 15 years ago, but never got off the ground due to strong objections and criticism from the people there who said there was no water source in the vicinity.

Nevertheless, the project started on Aug 1, 2005, and was supposed to be completed by the contractor on Jan 31, 2008. But extensions were granted and it is now estimated to be 99% complete.

Gross waste of public funds

The dam is supposed to supply water to the water treatment plant located a few kilometres away next to a small stream.

A new pipeline was also constructed to connect the treatment plant to the existing pipeline from Kota Marudu to Kudat to alleviate the perennial water shortage in the Kudat district.

“What is the use of the dam when there is no water source? Just depending on the rain will not be sufficient to supply the whole of Kudat district. This could well end up as another 'white elephant' project by the Barisan Nasional government,” Hiew said in a statement today.

Hiew, who is also the Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament, said the dam was a glaring example of gross wastage of public funds.

He asked how the BN government could allow such a harebrained and wasteful project to go ahead and at the same time claim that it was cutting subsidies to the people to save money.

Hiew also claimed that compensation payments had not been fully disbursed by the state government to the affected villagers for the land acquired.

“We received many complaints during the visit. It is understood that the kampung folks received only about 75% of the compensation," he said.

"Why can’t the state government settle the payment quickly?” he asked, saying that it was a well- known fact that the people in the district are among the most deprived in the state.

Little Napolean face: Nik Ali Mat Yunus

So there you are folks, the photo of Nik Ali Mat Yunus, the SDO (State Development Officer) of Penang who is "biadap" (rude) and bold enough to call the Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng "biadap" for criticizing him (Nik Ali) in an UMNO press conference. So now folks you can see the person Lim Guan Eng accused of wasting public money.

Lim Guan Eng“That's why I cannot tolerate people who waste money like Nik. No chief minister dares to upbraid a civil servant. I have been told that I was a 'terror' for doing so. I was told that the civil servants will chop you into pieces. You know (what) these civil servants are (like) - they are fearless and untouchable, but I have taken them on. Now you know (what) a Little Napoleon looks like, now there is a face to him. He is arrogance personified. I just do not how they are given so much power to control hundreds of millions of ringgit of the people's money.”

Najib splurge while Malaysians tighten belt

Najib and his administration sneakily announced price increases shortly after the last Parliament session ended to avoid debate plus ordered MSM (main stream mass media - newspapers, TV and radio) to give nice sounding names to the price hike such as price adjustments etc. Due to the price increases of these essential commodities, Malaysians will have to tighten their belt.

In the meantime, Najib's PMD (Prime Minister Department) was allocated an obsene RM12 billion budget for 2010 which far exceeds the RM8.2 billion allocated for PMD for the entire 5 years of the Eighth Malaysian Plan (2001 - 2005).

Najib has cunningly only publicized the RM3.9 billion for its "operations" in 2010 and no mention had been made of the other RM8.2 billion for "development".

So Najib's 1Malaysia People First Performance Now is all empty talk. People Suffer First should be the by-line of his hypocritical 1Malaysia slogan. "You tighten your belt and suffer first while we merrily spend billions of ringgit" is what Najib should be shouting instead.

FELDA Twin Rivers Technology Global Ventures

Tan Kee Kwong in his interview by Patrik Lee and Jamilah Kamarudin blasted Felda for getting involved with Global Venture and "Twin River Technology". This got me curious about Twin River Technology. Here is what Greg Pahl in his book Biodesel: Growing a new energy economy has to say about Twin Rivers Technology:

In 1994, Twin Rivers Technology began business in a former Procter & Gamble oleochemical facility in Quincy, Massachusetts. The plant had a nominal production capacity of 30 million gallons, but the company never actually made any biodiesel at the Quincy facility, purchasing it instead from other plants. In 1996, Twin Rivers was the first company in the nation to recieve U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certification of its Envirodiesel brand of biodiesel fuel for use in meeting Clean Air Act compliance standards under the agency's Urban Bus Retrofit Program. However, the company suffered from a long series of marketing and internal problems and closed its biodiesel division in 1998. (For more on Twin Rivers, see Chapter 10.)

N Tharmendran claimed military tortured him

N Tharmendran, the former RMAF sergeant who was the only lowly ranked RMAF staff who was charged for the theft of the 2 jet engines, claimed that he was tortured by a Major whose name Malaysiakini withheld, in a internal military investigation. Since it is certain such information will not be published by the hopeless newspapers, I reproduce what Malaysiakini reported Tharmendran revealed:

favourite method of his interrogators was to make him wear a crash helmet and repeatedly hit him as hard as possible.

"They used a golf stick and something long like a cricket bat. The reason is that when you hit me with a helmet (on), there's no mark. You can't find any mark, but the pain is internal pain. That's what Major (name withheld) told me. (He said) 'I can hit you how hard I want, but there won't be any mark. Even (if) you go to the doctor he will say you only have (a) headache"

And because of the physical abuse, Tharmendran said he suffered severe pain in his neck and shoulders and was barely move his left arm for a few days after the interrogation ended.

He also claimed that he was repeatedly stripped to his underwear, made to stand on a block of ice for up to an hour at a time, and threatened with death.

"I was told by this major, he has friends in the UTK (special forces) and KDN (Home Ministry) and it won't take him much time to get some men to shoot and kill me. Another thing he said was that nobody would believe me (if I report the torture), because he is the IO (investigating officer) and he has the authority. He said that, even if I go to the hospital and say I was being tortured by these people, he said nobody would believe me."

He believes he is not the only one being tortured by the intelligence officers, claiming at least 30 others were also experiencing the same ordeal for reasons unknown to him.

Hear what Tharmendran has to say yourself with the video of Thamendran describe his ordeal and torture by the Military Inteligence courtesy of Malaysiakini:

Stop subsidising corruption first

From an email forward: May 31, 2010

Without eliminating corruption and leakages, how can the government expect the rakyat to bear the burden of subsidy cuts?

In the play “Caught in the Middle 4,” Chandran pointedly asks, “And when are we going to stop subsidising the government?”

These simple questions strike at the heart of the current subsidies debate.

The government goes on about shrinking coffers, increasing debt and economic hardship; saying that it is time for the rakyat to tighten their belts and throw away their crutches — to change their lifestyles and have a paradigm shift, as Barisan Nasional (BN) has said before.

This is a lot to ask of Malaysians — the millions who run small food stalls, are low-wage earners, labourers , bus drivers and gardeners or work in local night markets.

The better-off among us will be protected from the worst effects of these policies, but for the rest of Malaysia, food subsidies mean whether a meal comes with meat or just eggs or even skipping a meal; education subsidies are the difference between a poor family’s youngest child attending school and staying at home.

Inevitably, the cuts will affect millions of Malaysians including the poor , average income earners and pensioners and catalyse the crime rate in the country.

In times of crisis, it might be justified to ask the rakyat to bear such increased economic burdens.

But the question is: Are those in power also carrying their share of the burden?

Can they honestly say they’ve done enough to stop the horrendous and immense outflow of public funds due to corruption and inefficiency?

If not, is it morally right of them to be thinking of making the rakyat bear this burden, while so many continue to steal from Malaysia?

Some may think that detractors like me are exaggerating, but I think recent history provides us with ample examples.

Not forgetting the fat contracts handed out to crony toll concessionaires with built-in clauses to ensure they get sufficiently compensated irrespective of whether the company makes a profit or loss.

Ramli and Muthu vs Submarines and PKFZ

After all, is it right to ask Ramli’s family to stop including chicken for dinner, while some people are taking half a BILLION in “commission” for the purchase of submarines that don’t submerge?

Is it right that Muthu’s daughter can no longer go to school after textbook fees have become unbearable for the family, while RM12 billion of our money — money that could have made those textbooks available for free — is lost through the PKFZ scandal?

As an aside, it is sad that MCA has lost the president who did his best to uncover this scandal and bring the perpetrators to justice, only to have him replaced by a president whose “big plan” is to go around begging for more funds from Umno — funds that will likely end up in the hands of “select” contractors anyway.

The simple fact is that not only has the government failed to bring corrupt politicians and officials to book, the government is in fact led by the very worst of these offenders.

Having the same former minister of defence — who was behind said submarine deal and his buddy’s commission — now asking Malaysians to tighten their belts is, I think, a little too much for us to bear.

Such a government lacks any moral authority or credibility to ask the rest of us to make sacrifices, when top officials stay unaffected and continue to live comfortably off the fat they have accumulated at our expense over decades. To even consider doing so is to demonstrate the exact antithesis of what leadership should be.

If and when significant progress is made in fighting corruption and leakages, then we can perhaps discuss the economics of subsidies.

If not, all that cutting subsidies will do is give the current pirates running our government more to loot.

Malaysia = Greece?

It has been disappointing to see Datuk Seri Idris Jala at the forefront of the campaign to cut subsidies. His past reputation has been reduced to one of a common BN spin doctor and hatchet man — sacrificed as a pawn to do BN’s dirty work. I can just imagine their communications “think-tank” believing they struck gold when they came up with the Greek analogy.

I am entirely inclined to agree that we are headed the way of Greece. But what Idris and his boys aren’t telling you, however, is summarised very well in Wikipedia:

“However, the Greek economy also faces significant problems, including rising unemployment levels, inefficient bureaucracy, tax evasion and corruption.

“In 2009, Greece had the EU’s second lowest Index of Economic Freedom (after Poland), ranking 81st in the world. The country suffers from high levels of political and economic corruption and low global competitiveness relative to its EU partners.”

Sound familiar?

In Greece, as in Malaysia, what is tearing the economy apart is not subsidies, but hopeless mismanagement, “piratisation,” and wholesale rape of the economy by the corrupt.

This tirade against subsidies has also not gone unnoticed by corporate watchers.

The hypocrisy bites hard when Malaysians remember bail-outs of Proton, MAS, Konsortium Perkapalan Bhd , Renong , UEM, DRB, Perwaja, YTL’s IPPs, Ting Pek King’s Bakun and most recently, Sime Darby.

And why are we continuing to support industries in which we are not competitive — just because an old man got it into his head a long time ago that it would be “awesome” for the country?

Let’s not even get started on multi-million New York Times ads to feature select “big” personalities.

Leadership by example

Good governance is in no small part about leadership by example.

The rakyat may be able to accept some measure of subsidy reductions — of a government can show truly genuine progress in combating corruption and leakages, as well as maintaining impeccable standards of integrity and austerity among its top leaders.

Failing this — and I think failure is exactly what surrounds our current government — it falls to the rest of us to object to any more measures (added to an already never-ending list) that will burden the rakyat while allowing the fat cats to roam free.

The worst is our leaders had not even realized the state of the economy until recently and being given the stewardship had unfortunately steered the country’s economy towards the cliff and down into the deep blue sea.

This is a wakeup call to all concerned citizens who love this country and want to rid it of rampant bribery, corruption, cronism and power abuse that come g. e. 2013, we must all vote for change as has happened in the Sibu buy election recently despite the deal of "You help me, I help you" by you know who.

The ghost of Altantuya is propelling this message forward.

Chinese taking over Malaysia? Graphic illustration

Dr. Mahathir has been playing fear mongering saying that if Malays continue to be divided, Chinese will take over Malaysia, with that otak kosong Ibrahim Ali parroting him, saying the Malays are not in power, that Chinese ar the powerful race threatening and casting the Malays aside.

Sharifuddin A. Latiff in a post AKU CABAR HANG, IBRAHIM ALI! (I CHALLENGE YOU, IBRAHIM ALI) listed out 152 names of Malaysians in powerful positions among which 16 names are the Defence Ministry head honchos and military high command, the second set (33) the top brass in the Home Ministry and police, and the third set (103) are the heads of missions – ambassadors, high commissioners and consuls – overseas, with the Chinese names highlighted in red.

You can see from the list below these Chinese are but little red dots in a sea of black (Malays), so what nonsense is Mahathir and Ibrahim Ali talking about? I thought I would add to it and upload a screen shot like Helen Ang in Malaysiakini, but in addition would highlight the Indian names in blue to show how insignificant the Chinese and Indians are:

EC Chairman Abdul Aziz is a talking arsehole

Michael Ng in a comment over at Malaysiakini's EC is not Superman expressed my feelings so well about this useless Malaysian Election Commission Chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof. He said: "But you have the part of the body that you used so well....the arsehole for talking."

The talking arsehole in trying to justify his obvious bias in not doing more about the rampant election bribery, etc., rambled about the human anatomy. When asked about Najib openly bribing Rajang Park voters, Abdul Aziz said: “When he (Najib) said 'You help me, I help you' he wasn't talking to an individual, he was speaking to a large crowd...

“To say it is bribery, it has to be proved in court. It must be proved that it influenced the voters and it has to be made known that the elector voted for the candidate because of this. But how do we prove it? Votes are confidential… I'm not a lawyer, so let the court decide.

“To a lay(person) it may look like corruption (but) this is politics. For example, PAS used to say 'If you join our party, this is real Islam, otherwise no heaven for you'. In China, there are 30 million Muslims. If they don't join PAS (does it mean) they won't go to heaven?”

Talking Arsehole Abdul Aziz on Najib's election bribery

“We specialise in it (elections)… if we (were to) take care of everything we (would be) very powerful (but) we can't do everything,” EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said, resorting to an analogy to explain the stance.

“We must understand this - the body does not function with one organ and one organ doesn't manage all the functions. The nose is for breathing, the ears are for listening and so on. If we only had one body part, say just the nose, we would have to use it to listen, to see (and) to eat with - everything would be so much easier then and there would be no worries.

“But God didn't create us in that way. Why? Simply because we cannot be like Superman. Doctors have to be doctors, lawyers have to be lawyers - otherwise a doctor would be doing the task of a doctor, lawyer and engineer.”

Najib has guilty conscience - Rosmah trip to US

Often one can deduce conclusion from what is not said rather than what is said. And in the case of Najib Abdul Razak's written reply in Parliament to the question asked by Gobalakrishnan (PKR-Padang Serai) about the cost of Rosmah's trip to US to receive that dubious award, Najib avoided answering the question.

His reply: "Rosmah's lodging and travelling costs are included in the budget provided for the prime minister, in view of her position as the prime minister's wife"

The fact that he did not answer the question means he has a guilty conscience, something to hide.

After attending the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC, Najib and Rosmah attended a glitzy function at the five-star St Regis Hotel in New York on April 16.

The star-studded event saw the attendance of Oscar winning actor Robert De Niro, Charlize Theron and Emmy Rossum, and was emceed by another Oscar winner, Jamie Foxx.

So folks, while Najib and Rosmah live luxuriously, he wants Malaysians to sacrifice and agree to have the subsidies removed.
